Job Summary:
The Director of Marketing and Communications will be responsible for developing, executing, and managing integrated marketing and communications strategies to elevate WHEDco’s visibility, drive engagement, promote fundraising and advocacy efforts, and support WHEDco programs. This role will guide all internal and external communications, branding, media/public relations, digital marketing, and content creation. Working collaboratively across all program areas, the Director of Marketing and Communications will create and drive diverse marketing activities that promote and increase awareness of WHEDco’s work and will support and collaborate with the Fund Development team to promote its fundraising efforts. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and creative leader with a deep commitment to WHEDco’s mission and a track record of successful marketing and communications initiatives in a nonprofit setting.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Marketing & Communications Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that supports the organization’s mission, goals, and fundraising efforts. Develop, produce and distribute clear and effective communications pieces for use in a wide range of promotional and fundraising activities.
- Brand Management: Lead the development and maintenance of a strong, consistent, and compelling brand identity across all channels, ensuring that all messaging aligns with the organization’s mission and values.
- Data Utilization: Evaluate and utilize market data to drive and improve marketing strategy. Collaborate with Research, Policy and Evaluation staff to showcase and amplify WHEDco’s internal data and research.
- Digital Marketing: Oversee all digital marketing initiatives, including social media, email newsletters, website content, SEO/SEM, and paid advertising. Ensure the organization’s digital presence is engaging, impactful, and aligned with overall strategies.
- Content Creation & Storytelling: Create compelling written, visual, and multimedia content to tell the organization’s story, showcase impact, and build relationships with key stakeholders (donors, volunteers, partners, media, etc.).
- Media Relations: In collaboration with WHEDco’s PR firm, develop and maintain relationships with media outlets and journalists, and coordinate press releases, media kits, and outreach efforts. Leverage external relationships and overall knowledge of media targets to promote WHEDco’s work. Secure positive media coverage to advance the organization’s goals.
- Event Marketing: Support the promotion of fundraising events, community engagement efforts, and organizational milestones. Work closely with the Fund Development team to amplify event reach and participation.
- Internal Communications: Collaborate with human resources staff, program directors, and organizational leadership to ensure effective internal communication strategies that foster a positive and informed workplace culture.
- Donor and Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with the Development team to craft messages, newsletters, and other communication materials that build relationships with donors, supporters, and volunteers.
- Communications Support and Guidance: Provide hands-on communications support to WHEDco’s leadership team, as needed. Provide feedback, guidance, and professional support to the Bronx Music Heritage Center’s (BMHC) Marketing & Communications Associate to ensure BMHC and Bronx Music Hall branding and funder acknowledgement language is consistent, correct, and aligned
- Budget Management: Plan, budget, and track communications and marketing expenses.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in marketing and communications role developing and managing successful marketing strategies using diverse media, including digital, email, print, and external partnerships, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
- Solid track record of branding and promoting events.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with experience creating content across digital, print, and media platforms, and with a demonstrated ability to distill information into clear and concise deliverables.
- Proficient in digital marketing tools and platforms, including social media management, email marketing software, websites, and SEO/SEM.
- Experience with brand development, media relations, and public relations strategies.
- Experience in project planning and management; experience managing a budget.
- Strong interpersonal skills, avid team player with an ability to work across all levels of an organization and to interface with program participants with sensitivity and compassion.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills; able to manage multiple projects and deadlines at once.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, graphic design and social media tools.
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
