Job Summary:
WHEDco seeks an Assistant Teacher to join Urban Horizons Early Childhood Discovery Center, a year-
round Early Learn NYC and Head Start program for three-and four-year-old children. The Center serves
111 pre-school students from over 20 different countries. WHEDco’s full-day program offers a nurturing
environment that allows children to develop confidence, think creatively, analyze information, and
communicate effectively. Each year 100% of the students graduate prepared for kindergarten, ensuring
that they begin their school careers ready to succeed. The Assistant Teacher will support the classroom.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher will be responsible for:
• Implement program goals, policies, and procedures while adhering to schedules and personnel
practices.
• Assist in supervising children by planning and executing age-appropriate educational, social, and
developmental programs, creating and supervising a conducive learning environment, and
collaborating with the Lead Teacher on curriculum planning for the group and individual
children.
• Assist in maintaining accurate records of children’s progress.
• Keeping the classroom and materials in good condition and encouraging their constructive use.
Reporting damaged or hazardous equipment to the Educational Director.
• Participating in team conferences, staff meetings, in-service training, and educational courses.
• Participate in parent meetings, conferences, and home visits.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Educational Director.
Qualifications:
• An Assistant Teacher will be required to meet the minimum requirements for the New York City
Department of Health: Bureau of Day Care, Section 47.13 Staff and be at least 19 years of age
and
(1) (3) Have a high school diploma or HSE, or;
(2) 60 college credits, and;
Child Development Associate Credential approved by the National Association for
the Education of Young Children.
• Proven ability to read, write, and speak clearly in English. Strong skill in a second language most
common amongst participants is also preferred.
• Exhibition of leadership ability in the area of supervision.
• General knowledge of early childhood development.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Satisfactory completion of required medical examinations and screening procedures.
Excellent benefits and competitive salary $30,775.05 to $34,643.40 based on education and experience.
After 60 days of employment, Center Staff working 15 hours or more per week are represented by Local
95, DC 37, AFSCME, and are covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
