Position Summary:

The College Advisor will support NYC high school students to set goals for post-graduation. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of College Access, college advisement staff, and school administration to recruit a group of high school students that will participate in college and career exploration activities. This dynamic advisor will facilitate workshops that allow young people to explore college while creating their personal educational roadmap to higher education.  The design and implementation of workshops will produce tangible results such as college applications, essay writing, financial aid, financial support programs, and scholarships applications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Case Management & Facilitation

  • Recruit a cohort of students in 9th – 12th grade to participate in Phipps Neighborhoods College Access Program.
  • Facilitate interactive College Access workshops and other activities (college fairs, tours, etc.) that provide students with the information and tools needed to research and complete college application process. This includes college essays, applications (CUNY, SUNY, Common App), financial aid, and college selections via group workshops and one-on-one walk-throughs.
  • Establish a comfortable learning environment and implement clear, consistent age-appropriate expectations and rules. Maintain classroom cleanliness and organization.
  • Advise students and families on all aspects of the financial aid process including FAFSA, TAP, and CSS Profile completion.
  • Provide recommendation letters for students when requested and remind students to follow-up with other recommenders.
  • Uphold program policies and procedures and proper use of technology, supplies, and materials.

Partnerships, Community and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with school & Phipps staff to support student & program needs
  • Lead workshops for parents with faculty and school leadership support, providing information about the college and financial aid process.
  • Communicate with all staff, parents, students, and community members politely and respectfully to represent the program professionally.
  • Support the planning and staffing of daytime and overnight college trips
  • Coordinate attending and participating in college related special events (tours, fairs, etc.)

General

  • Attend staff meetings, professional development workshops and program events as requested
  • Maintain accurate data (attendance, academics, etc.) on current students and track progress in Salesforce
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of College Access

Qualifications:

  • The candidate must have 60+ credits and currently enrolled in degree program.
