POSITION DETAILS

The First Year Program (FYP) is designed to provide innovative learning opportunities and coordinated support for first year students at BCC. FYP consists of the First Year Seminar (FYS 11), Peer Mentoring, FYP First Year Advising, The First Year Connection Club (FYC) and Faculty Development Programs. The FYP Senior Academic Advisor is a member of an integrated College team providing individual academic, career and related support to an assigned group of students as they progress through their first year at BCC. Reporting to the Associate Director of FYP, the Senior Academic Advisor is essential in fostering student engagement, retention, and success through individualized advising and strategic planning aligned with our student success pillars: Academic Success, Financial Literacy, Mindset for Success, and Career & Transfer Readiness. The ideal candidate is passionate about student development and eager to work closely with students, faculty, and staff to promote academic and personal growth during the crucial first year at BCC. The Senior Academic Advisor for First Year Programs will:

• Provide essential support in onboarding, advisement, registration, and retention efforts for both new and continuing first-year students, ensuring a smooth transition and sustained engagement throughout their initial academic journey.

• Provide comprehensive caseload management and retention support to a designated group of students, crafting individualized academic plans that cater to their unique needs, including targeted support for at risk students, to guide them successfully through their first year.

• Actively contribute to the development and implementation of the “Pillars for Student Success” model through an academic advising perspective, ensuring students receive the support and guidance needed to excel.

• Provide well-rounded support to students by recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs that cater to their diverse needs and aspirations.

• Leverage academic advising tools and technologies such as Navigate, DegreeWorks, and CUNYfirst to meticulously review and maintain accurate tracking of student progress and data.

• Assist in the recruitment, support, and training of peer mentors, junior advisors, and college assistants, enhancing the program’s overall effectiveness and reach.

• Engage in First Year Seminar (FYS) faculty development programs to foster a collaborative and informed teaching community that is well-equipped to support first-year students.

• Actively participate in community events to build strong relationships with students, faculty, and other stakeholders, fostering a supportive and inclusive educational environment

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required.

  • Experience with academic advisement, student tracking, and follow-up protocols

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., higher education, counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology)
  • A minimum of two years’ full-time higher education experience working with students needing academic skill development
  • Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators
  • Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities
  • Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office 365 and aptitude to learn new systems as needed, such as DegreeWorks, Navigate and PeopleSoft.
  • Experience with academically-focused student engagement programs such as mentoring, leadership, or bridge to college initiatives

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with education and experience: $62,411 – $72,667
