Hours: 34-40 hours / week

Job Summary

The Assistant BXstore Manager supports the store’s proprietress in upholding excellent operational standards, delivering exceptional customer service, engaging with the broader community and industry professionals, and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere in both our bookstore and wine bar. A prominent presence on the sales floor and engagement with our guests are essential, along with dedicating office hours to administrative tasks. The goal is to promote the right candidate to an operations manager role as they become deeply familiar with our ethos, inventory, operations, and community.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant BXstore Manager assists the store’s proprietress with these key responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the bookstore and bar.
  • Delegate tasks, provide clear direction, and offer troubleshooting support to theBXseller team.
  • Field inquiries from prospective brand partners, local schools and organizations,authors, fundraisers, and the general public, ensuring prompt and professionalresponses to requests and fostering collaborative opportunities.
  • Onboard B2B clients and fulfill bulk orders.
  • Coordinate the logistics and execution of a variety of literary, community, andbrand events and partnerships.
  • Lead opening, closing, and maintenance duties.
  • Manage inventory, including ordering supplies and bar menu items.
  • Support sales and marketing initiatives, contributing to strategies, setting goals,execution, and analyzing sales data.
  • Handle financial and administrative tasks, such as accounts payable, cashhandling, preparing reports, and maintaining records.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the employee handbook and policies andprocedures manuals.
  • Implement effective merchandising strategies to drive sales through inventorydisplays and visual tactics.
  • Facilitate hiring, scheduling, training, and performance reviews.
  • Organize team building activities and celebrations.
  • Perform frontline bookseller and bartender shifts as needed.

The Nitty-Gritty

The Assistant BXstore Manager must have:

  • Management or shift lead experience in a bookstore or hospitality environment.
  • An intrapreneurial spirit and strong situational awareness, communication,interpersonal, leadership, and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of tactand confidentiality.
  • A demonstrated passion for books, storytelling, and community engagement, witha commitment to promoting diverse voices and perspectives.
  • Exceptional customer service skills, in-person and in writing.
  • Basic financial acumen, including cash handling.
  • Proficiency with project management software, Google Suite, and Excel.
  • An appreciation for wine.
  • Food Handler’s Certification within three months of employment.
  • 21 years of age or older.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged standing, repetitive bending, liftingobjects up to 40 lbs, and climbing stairs or a ladder.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.It’s a Plus If You Have:
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with our point-of-sale system, Bookmanager.
  • Familiarity with independent bookselling and publishing trends.
  • Completed NAIBA’s Professional Booksellers Certification: Store Management.
  • A degree or certification in a related field, such as hospitality, communications, orproject management.
