This position is part of The NYC Compost Project hosted at NYBG as well as NYBG’s Bronx Green-Up Program. The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are partially funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions. Bronx Green-Up is the community gardening outreach program of NYBG.

Basic Job Function:

The Outreach and Education Coordinator is primarily responsible for developing, promoting, conducting, and documenting the program’s compost outreach, educational, and technical assistance activities as well as other community education and training initiatives. In addition, the Outreach and Education Coordinator organizes events, conducts workshops, manages volunteers, and is responsible for a wide range of administrative tasks.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organizational culture throughout the institution.

Specific Duties Responsibilities

•    Grow participation in and awareness of NYC Compost Project and Bronx Green-Up activities and events through mediums that include a-blasts, promotional materials, and social media campaigns.

•    Develop, organize, and conduct activities and events to engage the public in and educate them about NYC Compost Project events, BRS programs, and organics diversion opportunities.

•    Track and record all relevant data related to outreach, education, volunteer management, technical assistance, and organics diversion for required reports.

•     Develop, coordinate, and teach compost-related workshops and training programs.

•    Provide technical assistance and training to Bronx residents, schools, community sites, neighborhood groups, and non-profit organizations interested in accepting or processing organics.

•    Help community compost sites implement best practices for urban compost operations and guide them through the levels of any Compost Site Recognition Program.

•     Create tip sheets, handouts, flyers, signs, and other materials.

•     Recruit, train, coordinate, supervise, and develop Master Composters and other volunteers.

•    Perform tasks such as shoveling, weeding, loading/unloading plant and compost material, etc., in a variety of weather conditions,

•     Additional Bronx Green-Up duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in, a related field) preferred
  • Hands-on composting experience
  • Experience with MS Office and a variety of computer applications
  • Minimum two years of related work experience, preferably in community outreach or education Knowledge of and commitment to composting and community greening efforts
  • Valid NYS driver’s license Ability to move up to 40 pounds
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Able to work with the public, alone, and in a team in a variety of settings Experience in managing volunteers preferred
  • Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred
  • Weekends and some evening hours required
  • Local travel required

Salary: $47,000.
