The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers.  To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a member of the Executive Team and provides leadership on promoting the organization and raising funds. The CDO’s key role is to develop the strategy to identify, cultivate, and solicit individual, major gift donors and foundation and corporate donors for gifts in support of FPHNYC’s mission and priorities. The Chief Development Officer reports to the CEO

The CDO will lead the development and implementation of organization-wide strategies to promote FPHNYC and its collaboration with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (the Health Department) and to raise funds to support this collaboration.

To achieve this goal, the CDO will oversee institutional philanthropy, major gifts, and communications. The team will work collaboratively with the Health Department to identify the Health Department priorities for fundraising; develop a communications plan for sharing the importance of the work at the Health Department and FPHNYC; cultivate relationships with and solicit grants/gifts from foundations and individuals. The CDO will monitor grant opportunities in the public and private sector and will maintain familiarity with public health news and policy as well as philanthropic trends. The CDO will partner with the Health Department staff to strategize, plan, prepare and submit letters of inquiry and proposals to support priority projects.

The CDO will also provide oversight for the meetings of the Board of Directors, including planning the meeting calendar; setting agendas; preparing presentations; Addressing any follow-up that is required.  The CDO will be the lead steward of board members and work closely with the CEO to support and identify appropriate fundraising requests.

The CDO will lead a team of professionals responsible for fundraising, grant-writing, corporate and philanthropic support, communications, public relations, marketing, and social media functions for the organization. This includes hiring, training, mentoring of staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The CDO will set the yearly fundraising metrics for the organization and will be responsible for developing a plan to ensure that the goals for the department and the metrics are achieved.
  • Provide direct supervision to directors of institutional philanthropy, communications and major gifts and indirect supervision of their staff. Set goals and evaluate progress on a regular basis; assign projects and assignments. Identify professional development opportunities; recognize exemplary performance. Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing meaningful feedback, address performance problems in a timely and effective manner.
  • Collaborate with other units within FPHNYC to advance best practices that improve organizational efficiency.

Oversee Institutional Philanthropy staff including:

  • Develop and implement strategies to attract, retain, expand, and promote FPHNYC’s portfolio of active and potential corporate and foundation partners and major donors.
  • Collaborate with Health Department leadership to ensure a robust list of priority projects for fundraising. Build and maintain relationships with key DOHMH staff towards the goal of developing and implementing fundraising strategies. Meet with DOHMH program staff to discuss ideas in need of funding, strategize on approach, provide technical assistance including program design recommendations to strengthen project plan, budget development, budget narrative drafting/editing, narrative drafting/editing.
  • Research prospects and emerging trends that align with public health priorities. Oversee all prospect research related to approved priorities. 
  • Develop and implement systems to ensure compliance with the requirements of the DOHMH Central Review Committee (CRC) and of funders.
  • Build and cultivate relationships with philanthropic funders to understand their missions and goals and to ensure open communication.
  • Monitor federal and state funding opportunities and calls for proposals from foundations.
  • Work closely with grant managers once projects are funded, including participating in regular meetings with DOHMH colleagues and assist with reporting. Maintain excellent donor relations and stewardship on specific projects by communicating regularly with donors about project successes, challenges, and progress towards award goals.

 Oversee Major Gifts staff including:

  • Ensure FPHNYC major donors have a positive and rewarding philanthropic experience.
  • Build a strong base of individual donors to support the ambitious growth of the organization over the next several years, particularly to advance two initiatives: The Healthy Mothers and Babies Fund and The Epidemics Fund.

Oversee Communications staff including:

  •  Create high-impact, multichannel communications strategies that elevate our organizing campaigns, educate our audiences, and inspire people to support our work.
  • Work with staff and DOHMH to approve media coverage of FPHNYC and ensure credit of FPHNYC in DOHMH and partner materials where appropriate.
  • Plan and promote online and in-person events, including Public Health Talks, 20th-anniversary events, incl. marathon, and donor events.
  • Work with FPHNYC leadership team on enhancing internal communications and employee engagement.
  • Manage communications with board.
  • Manage general communications with Health Department regarding FPHNYC news, systems changes, process, and procedure.
  • Oversee updates to FPHNYC style guide and monitor compliance

External Customers—DOHMH and Others:

  • Develop and update reporting documents for key stakeholders on development activities.
  • Maintain and strengthen existing relationships with DOHMH colleagues and develop new relationships.
  • Represent the organization at internal/external meetings and presentations as necessary
  • Other organizational duties and responsibilities as assigned by the CEO

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be required to have:

  • a master’s degree in public health, social service, public administration or a related field.
  • a minimum of 10 years’ experience and demonstrated success in development and/or fundraising is preferred.
  • excellent interpersonal skills which are necessary to foster internal and external collaboration, as well as political savvy to build and sustain relationships with many constituencies.
  • both analytic and organizational skills and the ability to listen and communicate clearly, effectively, and persuasively at all levels of the organization, both orally and in writing.
  • prior experience in managing multiple projects in a fast-paced and collaborative team environment is required.
  • knowledge of NYC public health issues and a good understanding of the non-profit sector is recommended.
  • proven ability to lead, direct and support senior level professionals is required.
  • entrepreneurial foresight and initiative and the ability to recognize future trends and new opportunities and the ability to think and implement these strategically to attain the organization’s long-range plan.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • Salary range is $175,000 to $195,000

Hybrid schedule: Three days remote and two days in office.
