FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The mission of the Natural Sciences Department is to provide high quality educational programs in science and engineering as well as in support courses for the AAS, Allied Health and Liberal Arts programs. The Department assists students to develop the skills required to analyze the mechanics of the natural and physical environment, learn to think critically, communicate effectively, cultivate an understanding of basic scientific and ethical values, and become responsible citizens of the world. The department also plays a major role in guiding our students of diverse, multicultural backgrounds to acquire advanced knowledge and research skills empowering them to pursue higher education degrees in science and engineering.

The Natural Sciences Department invites qualified candidates with expertise in Chemistry to apply for the position of Assistant Professor in Chemistry. In addition to teaching, faculty members are required to conduct research and develop specialized courses in their area of expertise, share departmental and college responsibilities, and provide mentoring and advisement to students. Responsibilities also include administrative, supervisory and other duties as assigned. Essential duties require on-campus presence. All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to the tri-state area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • PhD in the area of expertise or equivalent.
  • Experience in the teaching of diverse undergraduate student body and record of scholarship achievements are required.
  • Availability to teach evening and weekend classes
  • Demonstrate expertise in in the field of Chemistry; have interest in developing general and research courses in Chemistry at Hostos Community College and dual programs in Chemistry with senior colleges of the City University of New York.
  • Record of procurement of external funding is highly desirable.

COMPENSATION

$70,238 – $82,928; Salary commensurate with education and experience.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Employees hired on or after October 1, 2022, and their eligible dependents will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, employees will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day. Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Enrollment.

An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
