General Responsibilities:

Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework.

  • Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories
  • Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials
  • Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards
  • Maintains required documentation related to laboratory activities
  • Manages equipment and materials inventories.

Campus Specific Responsibilities:

The Dietetics, Foods, and Nutrition Program in the Department of Health Promotion and Nutrition Sciences seeks a College Laboratory Technician (CLT) beginning late Fall 2022 or Spring 2023.

The CLT will have a basic working knowledge of foods and culinary techniques;culinary, nutrition, and/or food science education is preferred. This position will provide laboratory support to the culinary and food science instructors and oversee the maintenance and inventory of the food lab. The CLT will report to the Chair of the Department of Health Promotion and Nutrition Sciences or a designee.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains current inventory of all food, equipment, and supplies.
  • Procures and stores food ingredients (using locally sourced products when possible), food preparation, and analytical equipment required for food science and cultural food laboratory classes and the food science research laboratory.
  • Sets up all instructional materials and assists instructors in the delivery of undergraduate and graduate laboratory classes scheduled during the day, evening, andweekends.
  • Maintains safe and appropriate storage of laboratory equipment, conducts preventive maintenance procedures, and updates equipment inventory in the food preparation and research laboratories.
  • Maintains food preparation and food science research laboratories in compliance with safety and health standards; complies with and ensures fire and safety inspection preparedness; obtains and maintains laboratory safety certification in compliance with city, state, and federal regulations.
  • Ensures laboratory compliance with occupational health and safety standards inconsultation with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Instructs and supervises students on proper sanitation, food and equipment operation andstorage, appropriate laboratory attire, and general maintenance of the laboratories. Assists with laboratory instruction as needed.
  • Serves as the department liaison with Information Technology Services toensure appropriate and timely upgrades of software and hardware as well as ongoing system maintenance.
  • Submits requests for laboratory sanitation and maintenance, and follows up to ensure timely and orderly completion of maintenance activities. Tracks semester and annual food laboratory expenses.
  • Provides technical laboratory assistance for research projects and support for the Lehman Edible Garden, affiliated with the Dietetics,Foods, and Nutrition Program.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma with a minimum of four years’ related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for four years experience.
  • Undergraduate degree in nutrition/culinary science and ServSafe Certified. DTR and previous experience in foods/ nutrition laboratory and/or food service management preferred.
  • Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
