The Department ofExercise Sciences and Recreationinvites applications for a full-timeLecturerof Therapeutic Recreation(TR)position beginningFall2023.Candidates must have a strongcommitment totherapeutic recreationat theundergraduateand graduatelevel.
The Department of Exercise Sciences and Recreation is currently housed in the School of HealthSciences, Human Services and Nursing (HS2N). The School of Health Sciences, Human Servicesand Nursing currently includes six departments: Exercise Sciences and Recreation; HealthPromotion and Nutrition Sciences; Health Equity, Administration, and Technology; Social Work;Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, and Nursing. The school is also home to the CUNYInstitute for Health Equity. Departments in the School actively engage with community andgovernment partners to support evidence-based practices and health equity, with a special
emphasis on urban populations. The faculty are also strongly committed to high quality teachingand preparation of ethical and skilled health and human service professionals.
TheRecreationEducationandTherapeutic Recreationprogramscurrently enroll over150undergraduate and20graduate students. Lehman is one of two master’s degree programs inNew York State (NYS). Our program attracts students from within and outside of NYS andprovides a quality education in the RecreationEducationand Therapeutic Recreation disciplineand profession. Theprogram enjoys an outstanding reputation in the region, has an extensivealumni network and close relationships with many professionals and agencies for intern sites, jobopportunities for students and graduates, and collaborative endeavors. please visit our website:https://www.lehman.edu/academics/health-human-services-nursing/TheTherapeutic Recreation internship coordinatorwill be expected tocoordinateandfacilitateselection ofTherapeutic Recreationinternship sitesin hospitals,rehabilitation centers, nursinghomes, psychiatricinstitutions,pediatric and long-term care settings,andothercommunityhealth agencies forinternship studentplacementsand build and maintain the affiliationagreement between the school and agencies aswell asteaching additionalundergraduate andgraduatecourses in theTRprograms. Serves as a liaison between faculty andclinicalagencies.
Essential Duties and responsibilities
1.Responsible for overseeing the development of the student-training program prior to theinternship, which begins in the REC 400 Pre-internship Seminar
2.Responsible for establishing the written agreement between the internship agency andLehman College, verifying CTRS credentials of site supervisors and student readiness
3.Teach pre-internship and internship seminaras well as undergraduate or graduate levelTR and REC courses
4.Teachingmayberequiredduringtheday,evening,andweekends;however,theclinicalcoordinationwillaccountformajorityteachingload(atleast24credithours)asclinicalplacementrequiresanear35hourperweekcommitment
5.Seekand maintain list of qualified sites to ensure site supervisorsmeet the requirementof the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
6.Work with theundergraduate and graduate program directorsto ensurethat all writtencorrespondences withinternshipplacement sites are completed each semesterincluding all up to date affiliate agreements.
7.Responsible for rescheduling students wheninternshipsites change and/or warrant re-organization
8.Ensureall students are currentwithrequired documents as per the NYS student healthrequirements and the requirements of theinternship sites
9.Ensure all agency contracts are up to date
10.Oversee the collection ofinternshipassessment data to be provided to theundergraduate and graduate program directors
11.Monitorinternshipplacement sites for approvals/denials
12.Troubleshoot placement site issues
13.Reviewinternshipsite evaluations and make recommendationsto theundergraduateand graduate program directorsbased on data
14.Maintain ongoing communications withcommunitypartnersand work with theundergraduate and graduate program directors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
Bachelor’s degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.
Qualifications
1.Master’sdegree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation
2.Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is required
3.Practical experience in the field of Therapeutic Recreation
4.Evidence of a successful record of college-level teaching experiences
5.Requiredaredemonstrated experienceworking in alargeand diverseprogram,
administrative skills, and the ability tocooperate with others for the good of the
institution
Preferred Qualifications
1.A doctoral degree, pursuinga doctoraldegree,or having a plan to pursue a doctoraldegree ispreferred
2.Practicalexperience in the field of TherapeuticRecreationbetween 5to10 yearsofexperience
3.Experienceadvisingundergraduatestudentsand supervisingpracticum workandfieldwork.
4.Excellent organizational skills consistent with internship coordination is also preferred.
